Take a Stand, Save a Fish! (or Hundreds of Millions of them)

Interested in making a passionate plea to save one of our most essential ectothermic allies in the Atlantic? Here’s your chance.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) has posted the full public hearing schedule for Draft Addendum V to Amendment I of the Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic menhaden.

It might be a mouthful, but Draft Addendum V lays out a number of management options that, if implemented, would increase the abundance of menhaden along the Atlantic coast.

Atlantic menhaden plays a crucial role near the bottom of the food chain, feeding prized fish like striped bass, bluefish, and weakfish, as well as marine mammals and birds.

But according to a recent report by the National Marine Fisheries Service, half a billion pounds of menhaden are harvested out of the Atlantic ecosystem each year, making it the second largest fishery in the country by volume.

If implemented, a new threshold of 15 percent MSP (maximum spawning potential), and a new target set considerably higher than the threshold, would reduce the allowable industrial harvest, leaving hundreds of millions of pounds of menhaden in the Atlantic shore waters and estuaries to provide much-needed nutrients, oils, and proteins for other fish, marine mammals, and birds.

The ASMFC will vote on Addendum V at its next meeting in early November.

The Public Trust Project recommends that readers support menhaden conservation efforts by submitting a comment to the ASMFC and attending a public hearing:

1) Submit a comment through the Menhaden Defenders’ website: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/6491/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=7836

2) Attend a hearing in your state, where you will have a chance to speak directly with the Commissioners who represent your state waters, as well as ASMFC staff:
